Anybody who knows me, knows for a fact that I love food! I don’t even pretend anymore. I love to explore the taste, smell and texture of each dish. And Yes! I’m one of those people who suddenly lose all shyness when it comes to food.
I know it sounds bad but hear me out, food just hits differently, you know?...
Anyways I was genuinely curious about food (aside from the fact that it’s for survival and whatnot) and why we eat the way we do. What is food all about for me? Do I love food for survival sake or is there some sort of psychology behind my eating habits?
Turns out food affects our mood but then we already knew that. And now you’re thinking, tell me something I don’t know Salma. What we don’t know is the why?
You see, I used to think the only problem was that we failed to acknowledge that our eating patterns are unhealthy, especially when you come from my side of the world where what you see is what you eat. I used to think the problem had to do with the beggars can’t be choosers mentality.
But now I know better, I know that there are more factors that may be in play when one starts to develop an unhealthy relationship with food and they include evolutionary, cultural, psychological, family, social and even, individual factors.
It even becomes worse when one starts for eat to prolong that sensory feeling of happiness and satisfaction or to keep the demons at bay. It only results in bad news for you both mentally and physically.
Thus, the key to healthy eating habits is to catch yourself in an unhealthy pattern by
Identifying your eating habits and acknowledging that they are unhealthy and need to be changed,
Identifying your self defeating thinking pattern that makes food unhealthy for you in terms of weight. So instead of saying I can’t do this, it’s freaking hard. Next time try saying, I need to understand what triggered my unhealthy eating patterns, so I can make better choices when I encounter the trigger again
Being aware of what needs to be done to rectify the situation
Commitment to the process
Breaking the link between you and your unhealthy diet for instance keeping unhealthy food away from your kitchen.
Personally I’d say my unhealthy eating habit is that I just don’t know when to stop. Sue me but I just can’t hate the taste of food. However, in the spirit of healthy living, I’m working on curbing my cravings and eating healthy. What about you? Challenge yourself today and lets do it together!
